Ted Iwere is Managing Director of SME Media Limited, owners of SME Finance, a platform dedicated to helping Small Business Owners access finance to start and scale their businesses, and providing development services to the small business ecosystem in Nigeria and indeed Africa. He is also Managing Partner at LawBrief, a law firm specialising in start-up law and small business advisory services.
Iwere trained at the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), successfully completing the Diploma Programme on Market-Oriented Small Business Development Services.
Iwere started journalism at the Nigerian Observer in August 1978, moved to the Daily Times stable where he was Sub Editor, Reporter and Staff Writer, and has been Pioneer Features Editor and Sunday Editor of The Guardian, and founding Editor, The African Guardian at Guardian Newspapers Limited; Publisher, Business Magazine; and Managing Director, Independent Newspapers Limited, publishers of Daily Independent, Saturday Independent and Sunday Independent. Daily Independent won the Nigerian Media Merit Newspaper of the Year Award for 2006 and 2008.
Iwere holds a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications as a National Merit Award Scholar and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Lagos; a Master of Science in Journalism from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, New York; and a Certificate in Publishing from the Centre for Publishing at New York University, New York. He is a Barrister at Law from the Nigerian Law School and a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Iwere is on the Board of Directors of Independent Newspapers and UNILAG Media, proprietors of UNILAG Radio/TV. He is an avid golfer and a former Golf Captain of Ikoyi Club 1938.
